NJ SHARES, Board of Public Utilities, Verizon Promote Telephone Lifeline Week in New Jersey

This month, NJ SHARES was honored to team up with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, and Verizon, NJ to promote National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week throughout the state. The event, held September 14 through 20 nationwide, was sponsored by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.

The purpose of the awareness week was to gain attention for the federal Lifeline and Link-Up programs, which help low-income people get low, or no-cost, telephone service. The programs offer families discounts on their telephone bills and reductions in the installation fees for those who cannot afford to pay the connection charges. The aim is to help senior citizens, low-income families, the disabled and other vulnerable populations to stay connected with family or caregivers.

In New Jersey, Verizon partners with NJ SHARES to administer the Communication Lifeline and Link-Up America programs. Applications for self-certifying seniors are taken through our extensive agency network, and the NJ SHARES Client Services Call Center provides enrollment services for more than 100,000 New Jersey residents who are automatically registered by participating in qualifying social service programs.

The success of our partnership with Verizon New Jersey since 2005 has made the program a national model earning NJ SHARES the Nation Fuel Fund Network’s Highest honor - the Victorine Q. Adams Award, which spotlights institutional innovation and achievement.

NJ SHARES Receives $100,000 Donation from South Jersey Gas

This month, South Jersey Gas (SJG) donated an additional $100,000 to NJ SHARES to provide energy assistance to New Jersey households in need. The contribution underscores South Jersey Gas’ commitment to helping its customers during difficult economic times.

South Jersey Gas has been a strong supporter of NJ SHARES since the organization’s inception in 1998, and NJ SHARES would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation and thanks for the company’s ongoing support of providing energy assistance to residents throughout the state who may not qualify for other assistance programs.

“Many New Jersey residents are walking a financial tightrope each month as they try to maintain their household in the face of rising costs and shrinking income,” said Jeff DuBois, COO of South Jersey Gas. “NJ SHARES builds a bridge for individuals and families across a difficult situation and ensures they receive the assistance needed.”

EXECUTIVE LETTER

September marked the first-ever National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week, a special week-long event dedicated to publicizing Lifeline and Link-Up, two programs that serve a vital role in helping low and fixed-income households stay connected with telephone service. NJ SHARES would like to extend an enthusiastic “thank you” to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and Verizon for their help in raising awareness for these important programs.

Much appreciation also goes to our network of state agencies that took part in the awareness-raising week -- they continue to do an excellent job of connecting low income people, seniors and persons with disabilities with the valuable Lifeline and Link-Up programs. As administrator of the programs, NJ SHARES and its agencies are uniquely positioned to provide our most vulnerable neighbors with the information and resources they need to gain access to potentially life-saving phone services.

On a separate note, NJ SHARES was delighted to be the recipient of a generous grant from South Jersey Gas (SJG) who has strongly supported NJ SHARES for many years. It’s through support like this that we can continue to help New Jersey residents who are in the midst of a energy bill payment crisis.

Many, many thanks to our friends at SJG for their support in helping NJ SHARES continue to provide vital services to our New Jersey neighbors in need.

Best regards,

Jim Jacob
