New Jersey SHARES' Programs Showcased on AARP Teletown Hall

AARP NJ assembled 15,000 members during their August 1st Teletown Hall event. Members were able to actively participate and ask live questions to a panel of experts who shared Energy Assistance and Consumer Protections program information to the audience.

The event kicked off AARP's series of Community Resource Fairs held at various locations throughout the first two weeks of the month. The Teletown Hall technology brought a segment of the resources to the audience.

President's LETTER

This month, we remind our community partners of the early opening of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) set for October 1, 2012. Our utility company partners are kicking off their education and outreach assistance programs early this year and NJ SHARES will participate in the September events to help spread the word on resources available to our neighbors.

In addition to the critically needed assistance the LIHEAP program provides, New Jersey has a comprehensive percentage of income plan that is a national model. As you know, this plan is the Universal Service Fund Program which is available year-round to low income customers based on their income and energy burden. The program ensures that the most vulnerable can afford their energy bills by requiring customers pay up to 3% of their annual income toward each utility - 6% for Natural Gas and Electric combined. If enrollees are successful at budgeting and paying the discounted rate for a year, they can receive debt forgiveness on the arrears balance. This component is called Fresh Start and is only available to new enrollees.

Combining the LIHEAP assistance with the opportunity to make energy affordable to our most vulnerable residents is important for the basic needs of everyday survival. Connecting this population with conservation programs provides a holistic approach while teaching our neighbors how to conserve while budgeting to afford these basic needs.

NJ SHARES’ outreach materials include information on this and other vital programs. Many thanks to all of our partners and friends who aid us in creating awareness of energy affordability resources.

Warm regards,
Jim Jacob
