NJ SHARES Attends New Community Corporation's Harmony Day

New Community Corporation’s Family Resource Center sponsored its annual Harmony Day Celebration outside its headquarters, located in NCC’s Pathmark Shopping Center in Newark. The day featured information sharing, vendors, entertainment, games, prizes, food and even free dental check-ups for children.  One of the day’s highlights was singing fireman Herb Harris and his spot on rendition of “Happy”.  To see more from the event visit NCC at www.facebook.com/NewCommunityCorporation

Millhill Child and Family Development

NJ SHARES is fortunate to partner with more than 240 agencies around the state. Each organization has a different mission and focus but all provide holistic solutions to their community. This month we highlight Millhill Child and Family Development.

Millhill Child and Family Development was established in 1971 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving abused and neglected children in Trenton, NJ. The services and programs they provide today have been developed over time and with great understanding of what the community needs. They began primarily as a childcare center, and flourished and expanded by communicating with parents and the community.

Today Millhill provides educational, counseling and family support services to over 2,500 families in Greater Trenton. We are proud to offer NJ SHARES programs as an additional resource to our community, said Tamara Noizy , Director of Family Support Services, UIRC

Part of our mission at NJ SHARES is to help connect those looking for assistance with the available resources to meet their needs. We work hard to meet this goal through a variety of means – education, information, referral, advocacy and community outreach.

Our partnership with Verizon New Jersey is only one of the many ways we combine advocacy and community outreach in order to meet the needs of those we serve.

In October of 2005, this partnership spurred the opening of the NJ SHARES Client Services Call Center. The Call Center works to educate and assist people on the application and enrollment process for Verizon NJ’s Communications Lifeline Program, which ensures that seniors, low income households and all those in need have access to a phone landline in their home. The Call Center keeps communities connected by allowing these people to reach their doctors, families and emergency services at all times, if the need should arise.

Our trained Call Center representatives take a very hands-on approach to customer service and assistance. First, reps work directly with clients to determine if they are eligible for the Verizon Communications Lifeline program. Then, they help those who qualify obtain a significant monthly discount on their telephone service – more than $20 a month in most cases. The program is open to those who participate in one of 10 government assistance programs, which are listed on the NJ SHARES website (www.njshares.org) and senior citizens 65 years and older who are not in any government programs with an annual income at or below 150% of the federal poverty income level.

In addition to information on the Verizon Communications Lifeline program, all those who contact the Call Center receive valuable information on NJ SHARES energy assistance programs and other programs they may not know are available.

It has been nearly ten years since the opening of the Call Center and our partnership with Verizon New Jersey is stronger than ever. We continue to help more than 135,000 households in need each year, and the Call Center has become a successful model for other Call Centers and Lifeline programs across the country.

I commend Verizon New Jersey for their continued commitment to connecting those in the community through their sponsorship of the NJ SHARES Client Services Call Center. Their partnership is part of a greater nationwide commitment that has been undertaken by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates (NASUCA) to raise awareness for Lifeline and the importance of making telephone service more affordable for qualified customers.

Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande

A Message from Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande (R) from the 11th Legislative District

The New Jersey Department of Treasury has begun mailing out Senior Freeze property tax reimbursement checks to eligible applicants.  This valuable benefit is a tremendous help to senior citizens and disabled persons, reimbursing them for property tax increases. 

This program protects seniors and disabled homeowners against property tax increases by freezing property tax bills for qualified homeowners to help them afford to stay in their homes.  In fact, this program provided relief for 186,000 senior and disabled New Jersey property taxpayers who received an average benefit of nearly $1,200 last year.

If you have not yet applied for the New Jersey Senior Freeze, rest assured that it is not too late to take advantage.  The deadline to file for this property tax relief program has been extended to September 15, 2014.  The State hopes that by extending the deadline more residents will have ample time to apply for this valuable benefit.

This relief is available to homeowners 65 years and older or to disabled residents who receive federal Social Security payments. The applicant must be a resident of New Jersey for the past 10 years, have lived in their current home for the last 3 years, and have a total income that is $70,000 or less.

If you think you may qualify, and have not already filed an application, you can call New Jersey’s Senior Freeze hotline at 1-800-882-6597 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. You can also visit http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/ptr/buffer.shtml for more information on eligibility or obtaining an application.

News from the NJS-VZ Client Services Call Center

New Jersey SHARES Client Services Call Center has been assisting Verizon NJ Customers since October of 2005 and Michele G. has been with NJ SHARES in the Verizon Lifeline Call Center since 2009.

I started with NJ SHARES in December of 2009. Working here has been a truly wonderful experience for me.  I really appreciate our fabulous Office Manager, Kim Warrick, who allows working moms and students the opportunity to have a flexible work schedule, and I have the most thoughtful, caring co-workers, who over the past 5 years have become my friends.  Our call center employees have all been here together for several years now, making it an enjoyable place to come to work every day.

I enjoy being able to assist our clients with their VZ telephone discounts and they are extremely grateful for the assistance provided by NJ SHARES.

Social Security Administration Update

Social Security's Field Office Service Changes Beginning August 1, 2014

Overview of the new procedure

As result of the upcoming Field Office Service Changes by the Social Security Administration, the possession of the original Social Security card is a verification of your Social Security number. Beginning August 1, 2014 we will no longer issue Social Security number printouts in our field offices, nor will we be able to complete any letters verifying the clients Social Security Number.  Individuals who need proof of their Social Security number and cannot find their card will need to apply for a replacement card.

To assist customers, there is a wealth of information and online service options available on our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. Or you can call our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), and ask for helpful publications, such as:
