President's Letter

Jim Jacob, NJ SHARES' President and CEO

Jim Jacob Chairs Anti-Poverty Network

The Anti Poverty Network of New Jersey (APN) was established in 1999 to advocate on behalf of those living in poor communities with a mission to prevent, reduce and eliminate poverty through increased awareness.

As the Chair of the organization, I work together with experienced community leaders to address the issues that affect low and moderate income households throughout the state. The executive and steering committee is made up of representatives from a range of organizations including: Catholic Charities, New Jersey Foundation for Aging, Jewish Renaissance Foundation, New Jersey Policy Perspective, Housing and Community Development Network of NJ, Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry, Community Food Bank of New Jersey, and Communications Workers of America.

Utilizing a collaborative approach, APN promotes an ongoing dialogue and strategic sharing of information to address the problems of those facing poverty. We focus on four key areas – healthcare, housing, hunger and economic empowerment. Meeting six times each year, with an annual summit in December, APN works to inform decision makers in the state about the impact of poverty and the number of people it affects in New Jersey.

APN’s members include faith based organizations, individuals, non-profits and government officials. Meetings are open to any concerned individual or organization and we encourage all to attend. For more information visit:

Our Partners: The Salvation Army

NJ SHARES is fortunate to partner with more than 270 agencies around the state. Each organization has a different mission and focus but all provide holistic solutions to their community.

The Salvation Army is one of our founding partners and currently serves on the NJ SHARES Board of Directors bringing valuable human services input to the policy decisions of the organization. Brenda Beavers, The Salvation Army’s Disaster Recovery Director said, “I commend the NJ SHARES program for 15 years of service to a population that was without resources and their expansion of programs and services to aid our vulnerable neighbors”.

NJ SHARES’ partners with 14 Salvation Army Units in multiple states who bring the NJ SHARES’ energy, telephone and water programs to the communities they serve. Ten of our Salvation Army Partners offer our programs in New Jersey and four additional units offer the United Water Cares assistance program in New York and Pennsylvania.

Whether it is shelter for a displaced family or a warm cup of coffee for our bravest and finest—hope and healing is the message of The Salvation Army. Since 1886, The Salvation Army has been providing social and spiritual services to communities throughout the world. The New Jersey Divisional Headquarters is located in Union, NJ and operates under the leadership of Majors Donald and Vicki Berry. This administrative headquarters oversees all operations and programs for service-providing units of The Salvation Army throughout the State of New Jersey.

Along with services to support veterans, children, seniors and families, The Salvation Army provides emergency services for disaster relief. In the months following Super Storm Sandy, The Salvation Army provided nearly 265,000 drinks, more than 3,500 hygiene kits, and 7,381 blankets. 8,800 people representing 2,941 families have been assisted since the storm made landfall.
