Though the heating season is over, many of our neighbors are still struggling with the cost associated with winter heating bills. A stark reminder of this is the close of the Federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application period on April 30th.
NJ SHARES plays a crucial role in filling the gap in New Jersey’s energy assistance safety net. Starting on May 1, NJ SHARES will take applications for those who are not income eligible for the Universal Service Fund (USF) program and who did not receive a LIHEAP benefit this heating season.
This changes the NJ SHARES income guidelines to range from 176% to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Clients whose gross monthly income falls at or below 175% of the FPL will be able to apply for the Universal Service Program. In the current recession, it’s becoming more challenging than ever for individuals and families that aren’t earning enough to get by. NJ SHARES plays an important role in keeping these people out of a debt spiral that can result in more profound economic dislocation and could result in tragedy.
As we strive to offer hope and deliver help to many households that are still catching up from the winter’s heating bills, it is important to recognize our agency partners, friends and government supporters. We deeply appreciate all of your hard work and support for our program and our neighbors in need.
