NJ SHARES at the Devils, January 2, 2015

Don’t Delay – Get Your NJ Devils Tickets Today!

It may be getting cold outside, but the New Jersey Devils are ‘Sharing the Warmth’!

On January 2nd, 2015, NJ SHARES is partnering with the Devils to host a NJ SHARES Night at their game against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Devils will highlight NJ SHARES as the only non-profit at the game and host a 50/50 raffle benefiting NJ SHARES, in addition to usual promotional opportunities like a group welcome on the big screen during the game!

Most importantly, The Devils are giving NJ SHARES supporters a special opportunity to purchase discounted tickets to the game. A portion of the ticket sales go directly to NJ SHARES to help your neighbors in need stay warm and safe in their homes this heating season.

The deadline to purchase tickets is December 29th, 2014. The Devils are offering two different seating opportunities at two affordable price points – to purchase:

We would also like to extend a special “Congratulations!” to David of Hopewell and Michael of Wall who were winners of our special suite box raffles. Each winner received passes to suite boxes, generously provided by Verizon NJ and PSE&G.

president's message

NJ SHARES' President & CEO Jim Jacob

Plunging temperatures, “Polar Vortexes,” snow, ice – all of these things remind me of the importance of a properly heated home as we prepare for the winter season ahead.

At NJ SHARES, we are always advocates of energy conservation. However, in extreme cold weather, a heated home is vital for avoiding the dangers of frostbite and hypothermia that can result from a lack of heat. You simply can’t “do without” when it comes to the overall health, safety and well-being of yourself or your family members.

For families or individual in need, many times all that is required is a helping hand – and that is where NJ SHARES step in. Our goal is to “Offer Hope and Deliver Help” to all households in need.

Our work at NJ SHARES would not be possible without the strategic partnerships we have formed with utility and telecommunication companies throughout the state over the years.

Verizon New Jersey is one partner who works with NJ SHARES to make residential telephone service more affordable to those in need through the Communication Lifeline program. This program allows existing qualified, low-income Verizon residential customers receive discounted local telephone service. For enrollment information and to see if you qualify for this program, visit our website here or call us at 1-888-337-3339.

We also partner with United Water and New Jersey American Water to help administer assistance programs for those in need:

  • United Water’s UW Cares program provides relief to people facing a temporary financial crisis by administering grants to help pay the water bills of households in need through a network of community-based social service agencies in United Water’s service territories.
  • Similarly, New Jersey American Water’s H2O Help to Others Program™ provides grants up to $500 for eligible customers to help pay their water bill.

Electricity, natural gas, water and telephone service are essential components to our daily lives – we thank these utility partners for ensuring that no family or individual is ever faced with the decision to go without.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that the NJ SHARES Board of Directors has set a policy to expedite relief to households without utility service at the time of application. These clients will need to meet the income and application requirements, but will not need to obtain a denial letter from the TRUE and PAGE program. This new policy will enable our agency partners to expedite applications to qualifying clients whose service is terminated at the time of application. The policy is in effect now through the 2015 operating year, and was decided after an analysis of a pilot program that spanned November 1, 2014 through December 12, 2014.

For more information about the new policy, scroll down and read the detailed article included in this e-newsletter. All questions about the new policy can be directed to

Since its inception, NJ SHARES has been the safety-net energy assistance program that can assist a household with no other recourse at the time of an emergency or need to restore their utility service. Our community partners, agencies, corporate, foundation and individual supporters are all very critical to our success as an organization. We thank all of our donors, as well as our legislative and agency partners for their dedicated and continued support – they make it possible for us to provide Energy Assistance programs to New Jersey residents in need all year round, but especially during these cold winter months. Together, we work to help our neighbors avoid the tragedies associated with not having utility service, alleviate financial burdens and lead happier and healthier lives.

I wish you a warm and wonderful holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

Warm regards,

Jim Jacob

a message from your legislator

Assemblyman Robert D. Clifton

A Message from Assemblyman Robert D. Clifton (R) of the 12th Legislative District

The winter is here, and if you are like me, you are keeping your fingers crossed that we are graced with moderate temperatures, unlike the ice-cold heating season we endured just a year ago.

Mild thermometer readings translate to lower heating costs. For anyone struggling to keep up with the never-ending bills, a lower utility invoice is like found money.

Each year, NJ SHARES helps thousands of families in need with grants to pay for their heating and electric services. These are families that have been hurt by the turbulent economy. Layoffs, company closings, reduced work hours, family problems or health issues may have contributed to a temporary financial slump. And New Jersey SHARES can often supply both financial help and an important injection of optimism for residents who are at the end of their rope.

For good people struggling to make ends meet, optimism, hope and opportunity are crucial. The possibility that something better lies ahead can be a driving force. Our great country was founded on that very promise.

That is why I am a proud sponsor of legislation called the “NJ Family First Employer Act.”  The bill, A-1640, endorses a program to encourage and recognize “family friendly” employers, and companies that provide flexibility and opportunity to working Moms.

Many working families and single parents find themselves desperate for help from NJ SHARES and other resources because the bills keep piling up.

My legislation offers help for those same hard-working people. The bill advocates for equal advancement opportunity for female employees, and encourages employers to provide child care services and qualify for the federal “employer-provided child care credits.”

The “NJ Family First Employer Act” creates a mentorship and leadership program for working Moms, and advocates for flexible work arrangements for working parents. Flexibility helps workers better serve their employers while at the same time providing a higher level of care and parenting for their young ones.

Many of the people who will most benefit from the enactment of my bill are struggling today. Many are making sacrifices or pulling two jobs just to pay the rent. They are working hard every day, hungry for the chance to learn more, to do more, to make more of their lives.

New Jersey SHARES and my “NJ Family First Employer Act” both, in different ways, offer hope, optimism and opportunity to New Jersey residents who need it the most.

Agency spotlight

Jillian Nehr, Senior Team Leader

South Jersey AIDS Alliance

NJ SHARES is fortunate to partner with more than 240 agencies around the state. Each organization has a different mission and focus but all provide holistic solutions to their community.  This month we want to spotlight the South Jersey AIDS Alliance.

Compassionate and dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS, the organization provides essential support services to people living with HIV/AIDS and prevention interventions to individuals at risk for HIV/AIDS in the four south easternmost counties of New Jersey; Atlantic, Cape May, Camden and Cumberland.  Their prevention programs include community outreach and evidence based interventions.

Most of the clients served by the South Jersey Aids Alliance are poor. “Our important work is enhanced by other essential services we can provide such as NJ SHARES energy, telephone and water bill payment assistance programs”, said Georgett Watson, Chief Operations Officer.

GDF SUEZ Donates $3,500 to NJ SHARES

During the month of November, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources engaged in a special fundraising campaign to support NJ SHARES.

The company donated $3,000 to NJ SHARES, in addition to committing an extra $1 for each new social media follower or interaction on their social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ or their Blog Market Monitor).

The fundraising effort was part of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources’ year-long campaign titled “Connect for a Cause” – an initiative designed to drive engagement and support of nonprofit organizations that are critical to communities throughout the nation. To date, the company has contributed more than $33,000 to a number of well-deserving causes and organizations.

At the end of November, NJ SHARES was informed by GDF SUEZ Energy Resources that their fundraising efforts yielded a donation total of $3,500 – their initial $3,000 donation, plus an additional $500 from social media followers and their interactions.

We extend a heartfelt Thank You not only to GDF SUEZ for their innovative fundraising campaign and generous donation, but also to all of their followers for their support!

NJ SHARES’ Board Sets Policy to Expedite Relief to Households Without Utilities

The NJ SHARES Board of Directors has set a policy to expedite relief to households without utility service at the time of application. These clients will need to meet the income and application requirements, but will not need to obtain a denial letter from the TRUE and PAGE program.

The policy is in effect now through the 2015 operating year, and was decided after an analysis of a pilot program that spanned November 1, 2014 through December 12, 2014.

The client’s termination status will be confirmed with the utility provider during the verification process before an approval is issued. A shut off notice is not a qualifier for this utility service restoration program – however, qualifying households who have utility service and are behind in their utility bill payments can still apply for NJ SHARES with a denial letter from the TRUE and PAGE program.

News from the NJS-VZ Client Services Call Center

New Jersey SHARES Client Services Call Center has been assisting Verizon NJ Customers since October of 2005 and Krys W. has been with NJ SHARES in the Verizon Lifeline Call Center since 2007.

I have had the opportunity to work for New Jersey Shares since 2007. I have learned so much while growing with the company. I am so happy that I am able to assist the deserving clients with getting the help they need with paying their bills. It is a truly amazing feeling hearing the good that comes from our work. New Jersey Shares has given me several great opportunities within the company and the chance to help so many different people. I am glad I am able to work for a company that is so caring.
