New Jersey SHARES stands for the Statewide Heating Assistance and Referral for Energy Services. It is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) corporation organized to provide assistance through a statewide, year-round independent energy fund to individuals and families living in New Jersey who are in need of temporary help in paying their utility bills. Who runs New Jersey SHARES? New Jersey SHARES is run by a Board of Directors composed of representatives of the state's major energy providers, non-profit corporations and at-large members from our community. The energy providers are: Conectiv, Jersey Central Power & Light - FirstEnergy, New Jersey Natural Gas, NUI - Elizabethtown Gas Company, Public Service Electric & Gas Company, Rockland Electric Company and South Jersey Gas Company. The non-profit agencies are: American Association of Retired Persons, The American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Community Health Law Project, Association for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ), New Jersey Community Action Association, Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry in New Jersey and The Salvation Army. The at-large members from the community are Verizon New Jersey, PNC Bank, Sigrid Franzblau of Riker, Danzig and Michael Swayze. How is it funded? New Jersey SHARES has several funding sources. It receives tax deductible contributions from individual contributors, corporations, and utility customers. The seven major investor-owned utility companies contribute towards the administrative costs of running this nonprofit organization and provide matching funds for their customer's contributions. The state of New Jersey earmarks up to 75% of unclaimed utility deposits as a special fund which is then turned over to NJ SHARES for grants to eligible households. Are the contributions tax deductible? Yes. Who does New Jersey SHARES help? New Jersey SHARES' statewide energy fund provides energy grants to New Jersey residential energy customers who are experiencing a financial crisis, have exhausted all other available sources of assistance and have demonstrated a good faith effort to pay their utility bills. What are the limits on grants to each individual? New Jersey SHARES can assist with up to $700 for gas, up to $300 for electric, or up to $700 for electrically heated homes. New Jersey SHARES grants, along with good faith payments, and payment arrangements need to either maintain or restore service in order to be approved. Who determines eligibility for grants? The Executive Director and the Board of Directors have selected about 150 community based agencies to serve as Intake Agencies in over 202 locations state wide. These agencies process grant applications which are reviewed for eligibility by our staff. Eligibility for a New Jersey SHARES grant is based upon guidelines set by the New Jersey SHARES Board of Directors . Where can contributions to New Jersey SHARES be sent?
